Friday December 10th 2010, 4pm, -24°C, cold
Location: Fort McMurray, Alberta.
This was the first time I was flying domestic. I got to the airport way too early. Vancouver Airport is really a pretty looking airport. The plane I was taking was flying direct to Fort McMurray. It was small, so my carry on luggage was too big and was placed below.
I was travelling by Air Canada. The flight was over quite quickly. The most interesting thing I found on the plane was that they served Clamato as a free drink just like tea, coffee and other juices. Clamato is a tomato juice drink that is spicy and has clam broth. I found this so strange that I had to try it. It tastes like cold tomato soup. Apparently it is good with vodka, I might try that one day but this time I wasn’t even able to finish the drink. I was surprised at how many people requested it. The snacks that are provided on Air Canada, these corn chip type things are quite tasty.
I was travelling to Fort McMurray because I was going on a northern lights tour. It has been my dream for a long time to go see them. Ever since I first heard about them, I had wanted to photograph them. I had searched a lot for tours, and there were quite a few in Alaska and some in the Yukon, but I didn’t realise that there were some in Alberta as well. I wanted to go somewhere in Canada as I have already taken some trips in the USA.
Fort McMurray airport is tiny, we had to deplane onto the tarmac. I wasn’t prepared for the cold but we didn’t have to walk far to get inside. There was a window when you went inside for the Sawridge Inn shuttle (which was where I was staying). The shuttle took us to the hotel which was very nice and welcoming and warm inside. We checked in and was welcomed by our tour guide who also showed us around the hotel and its facilities. There was this Charlie Brown display that was mostly edible, not sure why it was there, but it was cool.
We got comfortable in our room until it was time for our welcome dinner. We met the rest of the people on the tour and went into a small room for our 3 course meal with alcoholic drinks. All this was included in the tour price. The meal was great. I then walked around a bit checking out the rest of the hotel and its facilities. It is a really nice hotel.

At 10pm we left to go to the viewing spot. The viewing place had lots of room and hot drinks and snacks. We watched a presentation by a photographer/astronomer who explained what the aurora was and how to photograph them. He helped everyone with adjusting their cameras and we went out and watched the stars for a bit while he had a laser pointer and pointed out some constellations. We waited until 1am but the aurora didn’t show. I was very cold, the temperature had gone down to -31°C and I didn’t have snow shoes, only hiking boots.
We went back to the hotel and slept in. There were optional tours to do during the next day, but they didn’t seem that interesting to me.
